How did this Mod come about  Mick has been using the SL-X amps for several years now & we were called on to resolve the factory defect. We designed a Modification & Custom Designed transformer specs to enhance the sound, feel as well as improve reliability. We also converted the amps from 6L6's over to EL34's to capture more of the classic Foreigner sound.

I have a JCM900 2100 amp & my friend has one that says JCM900 SL-X 2100, are these the same amp  This can be confusing as technically so let's try to sort it out; There are (2) '2100' models listed under the 'JCM900' Series. The 'Mick Jones Mod' only applies to the amps that have 'SL-X' printed on the front panel near the Power & Standby switches. On the opposite side of the front panel in small print it reads 'Model 2100 SL-X'. NOTE - Please see photos on the right hand side of this page.

What factory defect does your Standard Mod refer to  The SL-X utilizes a DC heater / filament supply to reduce unwanted hum to a few of the preamp tubes. There is a cap that was not properly spec'ed & starts to fail after 2-3 years of use. Traces are often discolored under the printed circuit board (pcb) and in half the cases the traces are lifting / pealing off from the pcb. These connections require repair. The standard practice for most is to replace the components however the same problem reoccurs.. We have designed a solution that includes installing a hand wired board thus permanently resolving the problem.
